Nobel letters price goes to Polish-language poet

The 1980 Nobel Price for Literature was awarded to a Lithuanian-born Polish-language poet, Czeslaw Milosz, "who with uncompromising clearsightedness voices man's exposed condition in a world of severe conflicts." Mr. Milosz, also a lecturer on Polish literature at the University of California at Nerkeley, is the ninth American (he's a naturalized citizen) to win the literature prize.

Meanwhile, in Oslo, President Carter; Pope John Paul II; Lord Carrington, the British foreign secretary; and Zimbabwean Prime Minister Robert Mugabe were reported to be among the leading contenders in the record number of 70 nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Other prominent contenders are Finland's President Urho Kekkonen and Stefan Cardinal Wyszynsky, Poland's Roman Catholic primate. The winner will be announced Monday.
