South Korean strong man claims presidency is his

South Korea's military strong man, Gen. Chun Doo Hwan, used the controlled press Monday to announce his "sure" election as president. Government officials said 400 members of the 2,561-member electoral college met to "voluntarily" and unanimously decide to recommend General Chun for the presidency.

Meanwhile, Kim Dae Jung, South Korea's foremost opposition politician, faced his accusers for the third day in a military courtroom on charges of sedition. The United States and Japan have issued strong statements urging leniency for Mr. Kim. At one point, American officials called the charges against him "far-fetched."
