Marinas files protest over Japanese A-dumping

A mission from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands filed a protest with the Japanese government over the weekend against its plan to dump low-level nuclear waste in the souhtwestern Pacific next year on a trial basis. The group asked the Japanese Science and Technology Agency to send officials to the islands for discussions.

Under the Japanese plan 5,000 to 10,000 drums of nuclear waste will be dumped in water 20,000 feet deep at a point some 600 miles north of Maug, an unihabited island in the Marianas.
