Pentagon plans billions for building Gulf defenses

The Defense Department will spend $4 billion to $5 billion a year over the next five years to step up its defensive strength in the Gulf, Defense Secretary Harold Brown said here. The department has recalculated its need to increase defense spending in the region because of the movement of Soviet forces into Afghanistan.
