Japanese officials are gloomy about possible limits on car sales to the US. Tokyo thinks the White House will probably press for some form of Orderly Marketing Agreement on Japanese cars. This in spite of Tokyo's efforts to defuse the dispute.

If there is no other way to lower the political pressures on Washington in this election year, Japan will probably go along with new limits.
