A few lower readings give scant relief in heat wave

Temperatures lessened in some areas of the eight-state region sweltering under a relentless heat wave, but most residents were in for more of the scorching weather. Weather Service news spokesman Kermit Keeter said Monday that a 10-day forecast indicated no relief. A total of 188 deaths were classified as heat-related in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.
