Between Carter and Reagan, the telling question may become: "Who's the issue?" Analysts say a Carter-Reagan race could hinge on who can avoid becoming the center of debate and who is put on the defensive over his record, his stands on the issues, his character and competence.

This could lead to an especially aggressive campaign where both candidates talk more about their opponents than about themselves in an attempt to focus public scrutiny on the other.
