Kissinger sees potential for showdown with Iran
| Washington
Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said Thursday the United States might have to face a showdown soon with Iran which could involve increased risks for the American hostages being held in Tehran.
The former secretary of state also denied he was involved in any way in the decision of the deposed Shah of Iran to leave Panama and fly to Egypt.
Iranian authorities have alleged Mr. Kissinger was behind the Shah's move. But in an interview on the NBC News "Today" program, Mr. Kissinger denied he had anything to do with it and hinted a top official of the Carter administration might have contributed to the story's getting around.
