Jimmy Durante, comedian who spanned two eras

Known to millions as "Schnozzola," Jimmy Durante, who passed on here Tuesday, bridged the gap between vaudeville and network television. His growly voice and comically exaggerated "dese and dose" accent changed little during a career that linked these two major eras of American show business. Just beneath his slapstick mugging lay a vulnerability that endeared him to three generations of audiences, and they took him to heart as they have taken few other figures in entertainment history.
