The object of the Monitor is to injure no man, but to bless all mankind.
~Mary Baker Eddy
The Monitor Weekly amplifies and clarifies how we deliver on the Monitor’s purpose, to benefit humanity by reporting what is happening in the world and why – and how this information matters to you.
To achieve this, we will do three things.
We will challenge conventional thinking. As forces from politics to social media try to break us into competing tribes – political, racial, or economic – together we’ll rethink the question “Who is my neighbor?”
We will listen to you, our readers. What issues concern you and your neighbors? What information is useful to you? Inspire us with what inspires you. Together, we can build a community of people who ask more from their news.
We will change how you see news. News must be accurate and trustworthy, but facts alone can miss the bigger story – the story of what touches and connects us, energizes us, impels us to reimagine what can be. We are much better than much of today’s news portrays us to be. The Monitor will have the courage to look into both the best and the worst in us – and not to blame, but to demand better.
“Just because journalism isn’t doing all this doesn’t mean it can’t. Journalism can be a force for good – for inspiration and progress. But only if we make it so. And only if all of us stand together.” ~Mark Sappenfield, Editor

What is the Monitor Weekly?
The Weekly print magazine brings you the Monitor’s trademark intelligence and empathy, deep reporting, and beautiful photography. It includes original weekly features such as in-depth cover stories, “People Making a Difference,” “Points of Progress,” the “From the Editor” column, a Home Forum essay, a crossword and sudoku puzzle, and photo essays, as well as edited versions of selected Daily stories.
Readers tell us that the print edition is a lean-back, contemplative experience for those who seek a break from online reading. When you combine the Weekly and Daily digital offering, you get the best Monitor news experience that helps bring clarity to your thinking and inspiration to your heart. And we realize that some of our subscribers want both, which is why we created a bundle that provides the print magazine, the Monitor Daily email, and unlimited, ad-free online access to CSMonitor.com.
Why should I subscribe to the Weekly?
We – and you – know news is essential. It’s the fuel for a thriving democracy. It protects our rights and our values, and frames our sense of fairness. It takes us to new people and perspectives, and causes us to think about them in new ways.
But what happens if the news becomes something else, if it becomes just a place to vent? What if it doesn’t value our differences but instead plays on them to divide us even more? What happens when news ignores the best of us only to dwell on the worst?
The Monitor believes that journalism doesn’t have to be this way. So we’ve rededicated ourselves to amplifying and clarifying how we deliver on the Monitor’s mission – to benefit humanity by reporting factually on what is happening in the world and why … and to benefit our readers by understanding how this information matters to you.
In that spirit, we’re committed to the following three things:
We will challenge you. As forces from politics to social media try to break us into competing tribes – political, racial, or economic – together we’ll rethink the question “Who is my neighbor?”
We will listen to you. Tell us what matters to you, what issues concern you and your neighbors, and what information is useful in your daily lives. Inspire us with what inspires you. Together, we can build a community of people who ask more from their news.
We will change how you see the news. News must be accurate and trustworthy, but facts alone can miss the bigger story – what touches and connects with us, energizes us, impels us to reimagine what can be. We are much better than much of today’s news portrays us to be. We will have the courage to look into both the best and the worst – and not to blame, but to demand better.
Journalism can be a force for good – for inspiration and progress. But only if we all make it so.

This sounds nice, but what's the agenda here? How do you think about bias in the news?
Our bias is to dig beneath the headlines to see what values and ways of thinking are driving news events. Whether the story concerns politics, diplomacy, trade, or social and cultural developments, we look for where people are trying to ease conflict, move forward, or promote better understanding – in other words, to make progress, however modest. We report honestly on events, while making sure that we look for where such values as respect, dignity, integrity, justice, and fairness are in operation. This kind of reporting respects readers and gives them the information they need to draw their own conclusions. This is the bias of the Monitor, to offer values-based journalism for the benefit of everyone.
