North Carolina is on the verge of passing a bill that would outlaw local ordinances aimed at reducing congestion and associated air pollution, along with overall energy usage.
Voters approved the amendment on Tuesday, with 58 percent in favor. North Carolina is the thirtieth state to ban gay marriage.
North Carolina's Republican House could have put the gay-marriage ban on the November ballot, when it might have boosted the vote for President Obama's Republican challenger. Instead, the House scheduled it for May.
