The Pentagon said Monday it will offer benefits, for the first time, to same-sex partners of military personnel. Hospital visitation and on-base child care are part of the package; health care and housing are not.
Same-sex military couples are not eligible for many benefits that heterosexual married couples in the military receive, including housing and medical care. But the Supreme Court could redefine the federal status of gay marriage next year.
Military benefits will still be mostly reserved for heterosexual couples. Despite the repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell,' military benefits like housing and travel allowances won't be extended to gay partners.

Don't ask, don't tell doesn't fly with NATO members, except Turkey and the US. NATO nations now allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. But 53 nations, including North Korea, Iran, Pakistan, and Syria, ban homosexuals from military service.
