Mosque opponents sued Rutherford County in September 2010 to stop construction of the new building. Their suit included claims that Islam is not a real religion and that local Muslims wanted to overthrow the US Constitution and replace it with Islamic religious law.
After a long batter in Rutherford County, a federal judge ruled that worshipers should be allowed to use a newly built mosque.
Sixty buildings were damaged in North Carolina and at least 15 people were injured in what the National Weather Service suggests was a tornado. Investigators are surveying the area to confirm if it was a rare, winter tornado.
The US is no longer in a recession, most economists say. But the economic recovery has slowed due to cautious attitudes among consumers and businesses, among other factors.
