A day after a powerful typhoon killed nearly 300 people in the southern Philippines, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies issued an urgent appeal for money to aid survivors.
Officials estimate 280 people have died as a result of Typhoon Bopha, which made landfall Tuesday. Flooding and mudslides have affected most of the countryside in the Compostela Valley. The typhoon caused power outages and ruined roads and bridges.
Many are concerned that North Korea's rocket launch is cover for developing the technology to attach a nuclear warhead to a long-range missile capable of going as far as Hawaii, Alaska, or the US West Coast.
Typhoon Bopha is one of the strongest typhoons to hit the Philippines this year. While some 20 major storms normally lash the Philippines annually, the southern provinces being battered by Bopha are unaccustomed to fierce typhoons.
'The aim of China's new electronic passports is to strengthen its technological abilities and make it convenient for Chinese citizens to enter or leave the country,' said China's Foreign Ministry spokesman.
