Afghanistan's Vice President Mohammad Qasim Fahim died of natural causes Sunday in Kabul. Fahim was an influential politician who served in several positions, though he is best remembered as a former warlord during the Soviet era.
Afghanistan’s next presidential elections are scheduled for 2014. However, President Hamid Karzai recently announced that he may call elections a year earlier.
Afghanistan elections planned for September aren't supposed to include parliamentary candidates with ties to militias. Problem is, many of those disqualified aren't actually involved with militias. 'The net caught a few small fish while the sharks swam around it,' says one election official.
