Astronauts' work was made easier by the HST's many crew aids. Astronaut Musgrave makes use of one of the spacecraft's handholds. Launched on December 1, 1993, the Space Shuttle Orbiter Endeavor STS-061 mission was the 59th Shuttle flight.
Neptune has come almost full circle since it was first discovered in 1846, and on Aug. 20, it will be in a straight line with the sun and the Earth.
A reproduction of a portion of the lunar surface was constructed on the concrete pad where the Lunar Excursion Module Simulator (LEMS) was tested at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The LEMS was a manned rocket-powered vehicle used to familiarize the Apollo astronaut with the handling characteristics of a lunar-landing type vehicle. The vehicle was designed and fabricated at Langley.

By spying on a neighboring galaxy, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured an image of a young, globular-like star cluster - a type of object unknown in our Milky Way Galaxy. The double cluster NGC 1850 lies in a neighboring satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud.
For billions of years, massive stars in our Milky Way Galaxy have lived spectacular lives. Collapsing from vast cosmic clouds, their nuclear furnaces ignite and create heavy elements in their cores. After a few million years, the enriched material is blasted back into interstellar space where star formation begins anew. The expanding debris cloud known as Cassiopeia A is an example of this final phase of the stellar life cycle. Light from the explosion which created this supernova remnant was probably first seen in planet Earth's sky just over 300 years ago, although it took that light more than 10,000 years to reach us.
NASA's Swift satellite views Comet Lulin as it made its closest approach to Earth in February 2009. Lulin, like all comets, is a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust. These 'dirty snowballs' cast off gas and dust whenever they venture near the sun. Comet Lulin, which is formally known as C/2007 N3, was discovered in 2008 by astronomers at Taiwan's Lulin Observatory. Lulin passed closest to Earth -- 38 million miles, or about 160 times farther than the moon -- late on the evening of Feb. 23, 2009, for North America.
A prominence eruption from the sun is seen in this image taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory on March 30. With a telescope and the right kinds of filters, an amateur astronomer can view prominences on the sun, too.
