  • In Pictures Space photos of the day 09/01

This artist's impression made available Aug. 24, shows the remarkable planetary system around the Sun-like star HD 10180. Observations with the HARPS spectrograph, attached to ESO's 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla, Chile, have revealed the definite presence of five planets and evidence for two more in orbit around this star. This system is similar to the Solar System in terms of number of planets and the presence of a regular pattern in the sizes of the orbits. If confirmed the closest planet detected would be the lightest yet known outside the Solar System, with a mass that could be only about 1.4 times that of the Earth.

'Two moons' on Friday night? It's a bogus claim about Mars.

The claim is that Mars will appear so large in the sky on Friday that it will look as if Earth has two moons. But the planet will appear as a mere pinprick of light, not a moonlike orb.

Oddball solar system found: Six giants and an exoplanet pipsqueak?

A team of astronomers say they have found a solar system that includes at least five Neptune-like planets – all within the equivalent of Mars's orbit. There might be two other planets, as well, including the smallest exoplanet yet found.

Cloudless skies allowed a clear view of dust and hydrogen sulfide plumes along the coast of Namibia in early August 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this natural-color image on Aug. 10. Multiple dust plumes blow off the coast toward the ocean, most or all of them probably arising from streambeds. Unlike the reddish-tan sands comprising the dunes directly south of the Kuiseb River, the stream-channel sediments are lighter in color.

  • Astronomers discover star system that looks strikingly like our own

At least five planets circle the star HD 10180 in regular orbits, some 127 light years away. This new star system could set the extrasolar record for most known planets.
