In Pictures Liu Xiaobo: Nobel Peace Prize recipient
Liu Xiaobo, a pro-democracy activist, won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Friday for his decades of non-violent struggle for human rights in China. Beijing was not impressed. Mr. Liu is currently in a Chinese prison serving out an 11-year sentence as the lead author of Chapter 08, a manifesto calling for free speech and multi-party elections. Mario Vargas Llosa, who was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize for Literature, was interviewed by the MONITOR in 1977. Llosa spoke about literature and politics in the Latin America region. He criticized US politics, called Fidel Castro's Cuban revolution "a great deception," and said he found Latin American writers to be socially and politically committed than those in the US.
