The "sanity" rally, blending satire and political activism, drew tens of thousands to the National Mall, with comedians Jon Stewart and Mr. Colbert casting themselves as the maestros of moderation and civility in polarized times. The rally was meant as a counterpoint to recent partisan political rallies on both ends of the US political spectrum held in anticipation of the November 2 Congressional midterm elections.
