Colorado wildfires: Winds fanned the flames of the Waldo Canyon wildfire in the direction of the US Air Force Academy. The Colorado Springs Academy shut down hiking trails west of the school. There are six major Colorado wildfires burning now.
The Dump fire in Utah, touched off by ricocheting bullets sparking dry cheatgrass, became the 20th wildfire this year caused by target shooters. Many states, including Utah, are prevented from imposing emergency gun controls.
The Colorado wildfire is one of 19 large fires burning in nine states. In Wyoming, a 4-square-mile blaze at Guernsey State Park is 80 percent contained. In New Mexico, more than 1,500 fire fighters are battling the largest blazes in state history.
