BP says it's capturing the 'majority' of oil from the Macondo wellhead after placing a 'top cap' siphon on it last week. Yet judging by the size of the plume on the BP live feed, some fear the BP oil spill is even worse after the operation than before.

Undersea video coverage Thursday night showed engineers lowering a 'top cap' over a severed riser pipe at the bottom of the Gulf to contain BP oil spill. The company hopes to contain 90 percent of the geyser.

BP is now paying $40 million a day to deal with the Gulf oil spill. Its overall costs are nearing $1 billion, and an expected tide of litigation is still ahead. Then again, BP is flush with cash.

It will take 7 years for the oil deposit below the Deepwater Horizon well to empty if left alone. On Saturday, BP acknowledged it may abandon its best chance so far to cork the well: the 'top kill'.

Even after the leaking well is permanently sealed, the Deepwater Horizon drama won't be anywhere near over. Just in Thursday's BP oil spill update, the MMS director is out, the spill is resized, and hearings proliferate on Capitol Hill.
