On Sunday, nearly 50,000 runners hope to complete the New York City marathon. After events like Hurricane Sandy, the cancelation of last year's race, and the Boston Marathon Bombing, each runner has a story to tell.
A good poem reminds us not only of who we are, but what it’s like to be someone else. Such exercises in empathy can strengthen our capacity for compromise. America would be better off if more of us read poetry this National Poetry Month – and throughout the rest of the year.
Based on my own experience, I still think of television as an especially powerful tool in raising poetry’s profile.
