On Saturday, soccer fans attempted to disrupt shipping on the Suez Canal and set fire to two buildings in Cairo. The fans were protesting death sentences for 21 soccer fans involved in deadly riots last year.
A riot immediately broke out after an Egyptian court sentenced 21 people to death in the controversial Port Said soccer violence case. Police and soccer fans known as Ultras clashed outside the prison where the defendants were being held. At least 16 were killed and hundreds wounded.
At least 79 were killed in the Egypt soccer riot yesterday, the deadliest violence since Mubarak's ouster a year ago. Some blame the military regime for stirring up trouble to justify extended its rule.
