Last year, publications were running articles titled 'Where are all the female directors?' The answer, as it turns out, was that they were all busy filming. Women helmed at least 17 releases this year, including the indie darlings Lost in Translation, Thirteen, and Whale Rider and the Oscar-winning Nowhere in Africa.
