After tallying the ballots, we averaged the star ratings to come up with rankings, rounding to the nearest half-star.
No films averaged four stars, but 10 received 3 stars. Thanks to all who participated. (Note: 'The Fellowship of the Ring,' 'Ali,' and 'Ocean's 11,' among others, were released too late to be included in the poll.)

Moulin Rouge
An extravagant, over-the-top adventure combining superb music, dancing, and drama the three keys to entertainment. "Moulin Rouge" deftly incorporated modernity, history, and myth.
Jennifer Hamlin, St. Louis
Mullholland Drive
Atmospheric and surrealistic mystery. The plot made sense in a dream-logic sort of way. Very, very funny, but also quite frightening, with a subtle sense of dread throughout. It made me want to figure out what happened, and left me pondering it well after I left the theater. Lynch is a master of intellectual filmmaking. More than any other living filmmaker, his images reveal more than the dialogue.
Ted Collins, Boston
Mullholland Drive kept my husband and me busy discussing the plot and characters for days.
Karen White, Berkeley, Calif.
Finding Forrester
I loved the story line. It was one of the most positive films I've seen in years.
Carolyn White, Flushing, N.Y.
Legally Blonde
A great combination of fun / serious issues and colorful scenes to look at.
Geneva L. Rose, Troy, Mich.
Enemy at the Gates
A graphic portrayal of sniper warfare in World War II. The Soviets' brutality toward [their] own soldiers was chilling.
Bob Hurley, Trumbull, Conn.
Shrek
Delightful story, beautiful images, and lovely message.
Bonnie Gibbs, St. Louis
Bridget Jones's Diary
Hilarious, great casting, and the good guy wins. (There were not many US films we wanted to see in 2001!)
JoAnn Kiley, Atlanta
Harry Potter
To include everything from J.K. Rowling's books, the filmmakers would have had to make the movie at least six hours long. So I wasn't really upset with scenes I expected to see never showed up. What is filmed, however, is done brilliantly. The whole movie looks incredible especially the Quidditch match, and the cast is excellent. I can't wait to see it again.
Ben Shultz, Delmar, Md.
I could barely hold back tears of joy as I watched Harry Potter unfold on screen it was more than I imagined they could do in translating such a wonderful book to film. (Also, 'Amélie' was enchanting and magical.)
Emilie Ast., St. Paul, Minn.
