Kim Williams and Phillisha Jackson
Compton, Calif.
Hear Kim's shock at the view into Mexico.

Hear Phillisha describe the animals she has seen.

Kim Williams is heading home after a trip to New Orleans with her 7-year-old daughter, Phillisha Jackson (above). Mom is taking the train because Phillisha didn't want to fly – and because it is much cheaper than an airplane. (Their roundtrip fare was only $300.) Having made the same trip once before by bus when Phillisha was a baby, Kim didn't bother checking the bus fare. The ride was "a total disaster" with Phillisha crying the whole way and space in short supply. This time, both mother and daughter are happy in the more spacious train. Kim sees the Rio Grande for the first time. And Phillisha has a new friend, Chelsea Bates. They play Go fish.
