Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico was once inhabited by ancestors of the Pueblo Indians. After a series of dry years and subsequent bark-beetle infestations, the area has recently experienced dramatic tree dieback. The end result: a return to an earlier ecological state in which grasslands dominated. This new-old ecosystem may offer distinct advantages, including greater resilience to drought as the climate warms.
