Bisbee, Ariz: In 2006, Congress enacted the Secure Fence Act, which instructed the Department of Homeland Security to secure the 1,950-mile border between the US and Mexico with 700 miles of double-layered fencing, cameras, motion sensors, and other types of barriers. As of February, 302 miles of barrier have been constructed, and slightly over half of this has been built under the new law. Many of the new barriers do not resemble the formidable fencing US lawmakers imagined. Here, newly-constructed mesh fence ends abruptly at a wash.
