Industrial Metropolis

Representative community:

Philadelphia, PA ( Learn about this community | Read Philadelphia, PA blog )

These are some of the most densely packed places in the United States. While this group contains only 24 counties, it holds nearly 38 million Americans.

These places are, as a whole, much more diverse than the nation on average. They are younger, too. They are the most likely to fall into the Democratic column on Election Day. In fact, this is the Democratic Party's base of support and has been for decades. President Bush won roughly 32 percent of the popular vote in these communities in 2004, and that was the best the GOP had done there in three presidential elections.

Industrial Metropolis and its politics are represented by Philadelphia in Patchwork Nation.
