Edging toward Obama

Posted by Kathy Heicher | 05.12.2008 / 10:38 PM EDT

When the Eagle County Democratic political caucuses convened in February, the Hillary Clinton supporters consisted almost entirely of women my age. We Baby Boomer liberals shared a common philosophy: It was time for a woman president.
One woman, a mile-mannered career pre-school teacher, shed her normally quiet demeanor to deliver a couple of impassioned caucus […]

Neo-Bigots & Neo-Racists

Posted by Arn Menconi | 05.07.2008 / 10:29 AM EDT

Bill Moyer, the journalist and former aid to President Lyndon Johnson, said this week, “Politics often exposes us to the corroding acid of the politics of personal destruction, but I’ve never seen anything like this — this wrenching break between pastor and parishioner (referring to Rev. Wright and Barack Obama). Both men no doubt […]

Clinging to Bitter

Posted by Arn Menconi | 04.17.2008 / 7:16 AM EDT

This week is a poor example of mainstream media’s coverage of what is important. How many “gotcha questions” and time can they spend on “bitter” while the dollar sinks, gas rises and food shortages bring uprisings? How would any outside observer of our nation not think we have become absorbed in the […]

Back to the future

Posted by Kathy Heicher | 04.08.2008 / 9:28 PM EDT

I lunched an old college roommate for lunch last week. While we were catching up on the news, she mentioned that the day was the 40th anniversary of her first act of civil disobedience.
It took me a few moments to connect the dots. She was referring to the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s assassination. My […]

When Eagles Fly

Posted by Arn Menconi | 04.03.2008 / 5:39 AM EDT

The town of Eagle can be considered a metaphor for boom towns in America. It is a small town of 5000 people that grew by 100% in the last 5 years. My wife and two children are one of those families that decided to move “down valley” from the resorts area for a more laid back rural […]

There’s a winner … but is there a mandate?

Posted by Kathy Heicher | 04.02.2008 / 8:18 PM EDT

The votes are counted, and the winners are appropriately cautious.
Incumbent Town Board member Ed Woodland beat challenger Arn Menconi for the mayor position by a vote of 734 – 126. The technical word might be “whomped.”
Why such a lopsided victory? Who knows? Many, many voters were uncomfortable with the fact that Menconi is a sitting […]

Eagle’s election countdown

Posted by Kathy Heicher | 03.31.2008 / 10:40 PM EDT

The polls open in the morning, and betting is getting heavy.
It’s a small-town, election day tradition. Somebody always organizes a pool so the locals can bet on just how many voters will turn out.
There’s no telling this year. With voter registration at 2,991 this year, there’s 500 more registered voters living in town than […]

Campaign yard signs? In Eagle?

Posted by Kathy Heicher | 03.17.2008 / 8:45 PM EDT

Move over, Hillary and Obama.
Sure, the Democratic presidential race is fascinating — but April 1st is town election day in Eagle, and it’s Ed and Arn who are dominating the local political gossip. That’s Ed Woodland and Arn Menconi, the two candidates for mayor. There’s another eight candidates vying for three Town Board seats. Some […]

Posted by csmonitor.com staff | 02.28.2008 / 10:50 PM EST

Well, you may call us Boom Towns, but the shakeup in property values has many giving a lot more attention to the economy. Will this be a defining part of this year’s election? Arn Menconi and Kathy Heicher will be blogging here soon. If you live in Eagle they are probably familiar […]
