Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) is serving her second term in the US Senate from New York. From 1993 to 2001, Mrs. Clinton was first lady of the United States during the administration of President Bill Clinton. Previously, she was first lady of Arkansas while Mr. Clinton was governor. In her roles, she focused on women's and children's issues and fought for universal healthcare. She is an attorney and has written two books, "It Takes a Village" and the autobiography "Living History." Clinton graduated from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass., and Yale Law School in New Haven, Conn. She is married to former President Clinton and has one daughter.

John McCain

John McCain (R) is in his fourth term in the US Senate from Arizona. In 2000, he lost the Republican presidential nomination to George W. Bush. For 22 years, Mr. McCain was an aviator in the US Navy. During the Vietnam War after a missile struck his plane in 1967, he was taken prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese. Five and a half years later, he was released. His naval honors include a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart. McCain has also coauthored five books with longtime aide Mark Salter. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He is married and has seven children and four grandchildren.

Ralph Nader

Ralph Nader (I) is making his fourth run for the White House. In 2004, he ran as an independent, and in 1996 and 2000, he was the Green Party candidate. Mr. Nader has been a consumer rights advocate for more than 40 years. In 1965, he wrote "Unsafe at Any Speed," which documented the safety defects in US cars. He has written several other books and has founded nonprofit organizations, including the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the Center for Auto Safety, and Public Citizen. Mr. Nader graduated from Princeton University in New Jersey and Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass.

Mr. Obama began his career as a community organizer in Chicago. He has written the books "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance" and "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream." He graduated from Columbia University in New York and received his law degree from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass., where he was the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. He is married and has two daughters.
