Under the 'Pay Our Military Act' passed just before the government shutdown, most Pentagon civilians are considered essential to military readiness. Defense Secretary Hagel is ordering them back to work.
President Obama will not embark on a week-long trip to Asia, because of the fiscal crisis in Washington. Even before the cancellation, some analysts saw signs that commitment was waning to a US 'pivot to Asia.'
Secretary Hagel spent much of the day following the Navy Yard shooting collecting input to help define the parameters of the review, which could be announced Wednesday, a senior Pentagon official said.
The US can't call the shots with its $1.6 billion in aid, but access to Egypt's leaders, preferential treatment at the Suez Canal, and rights of overflight at a strategic location benefit the Pentagon.
