The Christian Science Monitor - Centennial Celebration

Paper edition of the Monitor

By Michael Ruby

I’ve been reading the Monitor daily since I discovered it in my high school library (1956). It has had some amazingly good reporters. Last night I noted to myself that the reason I like the Monitor is that it gives me the “story behind the story”, to use an old cliche. I feel that with the Monitor I’ve understood what is happening in the world rather than being surprised and mystified by it. And I like the paper copy because I can wad it up and take it with me. I read a couple of articles while riding the bus yesterday. I got another article read last evening while waiting for a public lecture to start at our nearby university. You can’t do that with the web. I seldom check out the CSM on the web. Several times a day I glance at Google News since it is my home page but I never do more than take in a few headlines. I want to read during my gap times not when I’m supposed to be working.
