About In Focus

A variable schedule is one of the things I love about working as a newspaper photographer – no two days are alike. I might be covering a news event one day, taking a portrait for a features section the next and be out shooting in the woods for our art/essay pages on the third.

Now the challenge of photojournalism is capturing the unpredictability of life. Whether it is the fleeting expression of eternity crossing a monk's face or the minutes when the setting sun pierces some trees to illuminate an otherwise dreary subject, instinct takes over and I reflexively push the shutter button to capture unique moments.

I've been taking pictures since I was a boy. There are times today when I hunch my shoulders and scrunch my face to the viewfinder that I still feel like that young explorer nearly 4 decades ago.

This need to explore has taken me and my camera around the globe several times. But what I find really exciting now is taking pictures close to home. To see through the veneer of the ordinary to harvest gems from familiar surroundings.

Please join me on this journey as I put my world "In Focus."

In Focus is written and photographed by John Nordell
