Recipient: Kristin Helmore's series The Neglected Resource: Women in the Third World was chosen as a finalist for the Vanguard Award from Women in Communications, Inc. Helmore's entry featured and recognized at the September WICI National Professional Conference in New York.

Recipient: Robin Jareaux from a field of 7,853 entries; the Monitor won four awards in the Society of Newspaper Design's sixth annual competition. The winning entries were a Travel section and a Personal Finance section ( in categories for regularly appearing travel and business sections), a zee-page (People under attack as an example of news analysis, and the David Willis Hunger in Africa series) for a news project on a single subject.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State
Recipient: The Christian Science Monitor was honored for its consistent editorial support of church-state separation. It was the first newspaper to be selected for the Americans United Religious Liberty Award. Curtis J. Sitomer accepted the award for the newspaper.

Population Institute
Recipient: David K. Willis won the Population Institute's prize for best series on population worldwide in 1984 for his series, Hunger in Africa. He was selected from a field of 2000 journalists. The Population Institute gives the award in conjunction with the United Nations Fund for Population Activities.

International Religious Liberties Association
Recipient: Curtis J. Sitomer was presented an award for his Justice column and general coverage of religious liberty issues.

Kenny Rogers
1985 World Hunger Media Awards
Recipient: David K. Willis, Third World correspondent, was a co-winner of this award for best newspaper coverage with his Hunger in Africa series. They lauded his "richly-detailed, often inspiration individual stories of the work being done to relieve the famine," as well as "serious reforms-political, cultural, economic, and above all agricultural needed to effect long-term solutions."

Benjamin Fine Award
Recipients: Keith Henderson and Robert Marquand. The National Association of Secondary School Principals presented this award for the pull-out section on critical thinking, looking at textbooks and textbook reforms. They won in the category of Newspaper Supplement on Education.

Matrix Award
Recipient: Katherine W. Fanning, Monitor Editor won this award (from Women in Communications, Inc.) for "her extensive experience in print media." Award honors people who have "distinguished themselves in journalism, communications, and/or as community leaders."

NENA Newspaper of the Year
Recipient: The Christian Science Monitor received special praise from judges in the New England Newspaper Association for being "in a class by itself."

Editor and Publisher Promotion
Awards Competition
Recipient: The Christian Science Monitor won first prize for multi-media promoting and a Certificate of Merit for circulation/editorial promotion for its Testimonial Ad campaign.

Recipient: Robin Jareaux.
From a field of 6,045 entries, the Monitor won an "award of excellence" for its travel section in the Society of Newspaper Design's fifth annual competition.

Gold Star Award
Recipient: Jim Bencivenga won an Award of Distinction for Ask a school custodian what he did on his summer vacation (8/23/83) as a feature article in a newspaper with circulation over 50,000. This award was presented by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees.

Recipient: The Christian Science Monitor received a citation for outstanding coverage of architecture.

Benjamin Fine Journalism Award
Recipient: Jim Bencivenga's interview Two retiring teachers view schools today and yesterday (5/9/84) was awarded a Benjamin Fine Award (as a single education article in a newspaper with circulation between 100,001 and 500,000) from the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Recipient: Kay Fanning - Northeastern University

Recipient: The Christian Science Monitor won for outstanding education reporting in the series category, for pullout sections on "Education and Business" and "Education and Foundations."

Recipient: Jim Bencivenga won this award, on of 13 given annually by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, in the single article category for outstanding education reporting for his article on merit pay in Long Island Schools.

Massachusetts Engineers' Council
Recipient: Francine Kiefer's High Tech at Home series won first place in the Council's New England Media Award contest. In addition to this, she was cited for Distinguished Reporting on Technical and Scientific Matters and the "most significant contribution in 1982 to public knowledge and understanding of the role of engineering and technology in contemporary American life."

Population Action Council
Recipient: Richard L. Strout won the Best Columnist Award.

Population Action Council
Recipient: David Winder won a citation of merit for Distinguished Journalistic Efforts in the Best US Daily category. His winning entry was, Why the world population explosion fizzled: a tale of sharply changed village attitudes.

Recipient: The Christian Science Monitor won a Citation of Merit for distinguished journalist efforts for David Winder's coverage and other Monitor stories on world population events.

Suffolk University
Recipient: James N. Goodsell was honored "for his vigorous work . . . and selfless service to the Hispanic community of Massachusetts." He received praise and a certificate during a Latin American festival sponsored by Suffolk University.

Edward J. Meeman Awards
Recipient: Jonathan Harsch won the Meeman Award (for conservation writing), sponsored by Scripps-Howard, for his four-part series, Save the soil.

ASNE Distinguished Writers Awards
Recipient: Rushworth Kidder was cited as one of two finalists in the Documentary category of the American Society of Newspaper Editors annual contest. His entry was composed of his Five Families series and two Home Forum essays.

Livingston Awards
Recipient: Greg Lamb was a Livingston Awards finalist.

New England Women's Press Association
Recipient: Melvin Maddocks three columns Neither victims nor executioners, The case of the vanishing telegram, and In defense of procrastination, earned him recognition as Best Columnist in the NEWPA annual competition.

Recipient: Hilary DeVires won first place in the category of Magazine Journalism for her articles, Marva Colins: Chicago's Superteacher under fire and Robert Penn Warren: Still a yearner still a wonderer.

The prestigious ASCAP, Inc., awarded its Deems Taylor Award for the best newspaper or magazine article on music in 1982. Mr. Owens writes a monthly series entitled Inside 20th-Century Music.
