Banners of allegiance in Kosovo

Reporters on the Job: As Kosovars celebrated the first anniversary of their self-declared independence from Serbia (read today's story here), the streets were a blizzard of flags Tuesday. You could see the year-old blue-and-gold Kosovar flag. But just as common was the black eagle on red background – the Albanian flag.

One 25-story office building in downtown Pristina had a giant Kosovar flag on one side, an Albanian flag on another, and an American flag on the third side. I didn’t walk around to see what was on the fourth side, but I suspect it was the European Union flag. On the streets, there were a fair number of people hanging out of cars waving American flags, indicative of the gratitude felt by many for the US role here.
