China suspended its own plans for nuclear power expansion in March. The decision puts on hold plans announced in 2010 to build 28 new reactors by 2020, 20 of which were already under construction. As the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases, China is under tremendous pressure to move beyond coal and oil for its energy needs. It already has six nuclear power plants in use.

The Chinese government vowed that China would continue to expand its nuclear power capabilities and that the halt would only be a temporary one while safety standards were reviewed, the Associated Press reported.
