E. coli's economic impact on Europe, by the numbers

The European Union is planning to offer €150 million ($220 million) in aid to European farmers who have suffered huge financial losses because of last week’s E. coli outbreak. Is that enough to make up for their losses?

2. The Netherlands

Dutch News reports that The Netherlands has lost €50 million ($73 million) so far. (The EU fresh produce association Freshfel puts that number even higher, at about €80 million). A Dutch government official is slated to visit Russia soon to try and persuade the Russian government to exclude the Netherlands from its ban on agricultural imports from eurozone states. Dutch agricultural exports to Russia are worth €150 million a year and Russia is the largest export market for European produce, according to Freshfel. Agriculture makes up 2.6 percent of The Netherlands’ GDP.
