What is Somalia's Al Shabab?

- Scott BaldaufStaff writer

Does Al Shabab benefit from Somali piracy?

No. Most pirate ports are based in areas outside of Al Shabab’s control, from the northern port of Eyl to the central port of Haradheere, although some pirate gangs – including those involved in the kidnapping of late French tourist Marie Dedieu – have used Shabab headquarters in Kismayo as a base. Al Shabab spokesmen say that piracy and other forms of theft are against Islam, and would be halted under an Al Shabab government.
