A Mandela tribute from The Christian Science Board of Directors

We join the world in honoring the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. By example, he has given us a working model of persistent courage in the face of entrenched oppression, of enduring hope during years of imprisonment, of genuine forgiveness for accumulated injustices, of patient community-building in a fractured society. His wisdom sparkled with humor even as his idealism was grounded with practical responses to complex problems.

The founder of Christianity said centuries ago, “By their fruits, you shall know them” (Matt. 7:20). Measuring Mr. Mandela by this standard, his life has given all humanity a lasting harvest of moral and spiritual abundance. We pray that the boundless love of God may comfort and console his immediate family, his fellow South Africans, and every heart across the world that feels keenly the passing of this great man.
