Amtrak, the government-owned passenger train service, drew a record 28.7 million customers in the year ending Sept. 30, an 11 percent increase over the previous year and the sixth straight year ridership has increased.

Efforts to turn prisons "green" are on the rise across the country, as prison administrators respond to pressures to conserve energy, reduce waste, and generally be more environmentally conscious, the Associated Press reports. In North Carolina, state prisons have switched to chemical-free cleaners; in Indiana, correctional facilities have installed water boilers that run on waste wood chips; and in Washington State, Cedar Creek inmates have grown 8,000 pounds of organic vegetables this year.
Predatory falcons could be enlisted at Bagram Air Force base in Afghanistan to help deal with smaller birds that increasingly strike planes as they take off, land, and taxi, according to The Washington Post. Military personnel have tried vainly to scare away the birds in various ways, so now will see if a private contractor can do the job.
