When it comes to Hollywood westerns, 'Shane' rules

It used to be that the dusty western was a staple of summertime moviegoing. Even though fewer are made these days – or remade, as in the case of "3:10 to Yuma" – the genre remains a classic of the American filmmaking industry. After all, scenes with jut-jawed sheriffs, sinister gunfighters, and majestic scenery never totally go out of style. Recently, the Western Writers of America voted for their favorite westerns as part of an American Film Institute campaign to rank the best in this and other categories. The all-time Top 10, based on that balloting, with the year each was released:

1. "Shane" 1953
2. "High Noon" 1952
3. "The Searchers" 1956
4. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" 1969
5. "Dances with Wolves" 1990
6. "The Wild Bunch" 1969
7. "Red River" 1948
8. "Tombstone" 1993
9. "The Magnificent Seven" 1960
10. "Open Range" 2003
