Jones played so long ago that he is seems almost a mythical figure today. But his achievements were very real. The one that brought the greatest acclaim was winning what in 1930 constituted the Grand Slam. Amateur golf was a big deal then and Jones was a career amateur who managed to win the US and British amateur titles as well as the US and British Opens.
After this Slam, Jones retired at age 28 to concentrate on being a lawyer. His golfing legacy only grew, however, as he founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club in his native Georgia, then went on to cofound the Masters tournament, which the club hosts.
