Spitting at an opposing player has happened before in the NFL. Remember Bill Romanowski of the Broncos in 1997? The most recent example occured back on Nov. 15 of this season when Eagles offensive lineman Mike McGlynn said Redskin defensive back LaRon Landry spat on him during the Eagles' drubbing of Washington.
