It took three sets, but defending ladies champ Kim Clijsters beat back a strong challenge from Samantha Stosur in the US Open quarterfinals in New York Tuesday evening. The second-seeded Clijsters downed Stosur, the fifth seed, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

As befitted their seeding, this was a close match throughout. Despite having more unforced errors (43-36), Clijsters had a better first-serve performance and hit more winners (25-23) than Stosur. Clijsters also took advantage of break-point opportunities and net approaches.

Clijsters now prepares to meet former Open champ Venus Williams Friday in one ladies semifinal. Venus beat sixth seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy, 7-6, 6-4 on Tuesday.
