Tiger Woods will be playing in the Ryder Cup for the US next month in Wales. US captain Corey Pavin made the announcement Tuesday that the 14-time major champion was one of his four picks to join the top eight US players in Ryder Cup points already announced for the squad.

Also receiving Pavin's picks were PGA Tour rookie Ricky Fowler, former Masters champ Zach Johnson, and 2009 British Open champion Stewart Cink. Fowler has yet to win on the PGA Tour this year, but has competed for the US in the past two Walker Cup competitions. The Walker Cup pits amateur golfers from the US against amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland.

The eight players already on the US Ryder Cup squad are Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Jeff Overton, Dustin Johnson, and Bubba Watson. Kuchar, Johnson, Overton, Fowler, and Watson will be first-time Ryder Cuppers.

The Ryder Cup is a golf match between teams of professional golfers from the US and Europe, held every other year.

The US will be defending its 2008 championship at the 38th Ryder Cup, to be played at the Celtic Manor Twenty Ten Course in Newport, Wales, beginning Oct. 1.

Editor's Note: The original version of this story incorrectly stated that the Ryder Cup is a golf match between teams of professional golfers from the US and Great Britain and Ireland. Top players from Europe have participated in the event since 1979.
