4. How Green Was My Valley (1941)

The Academy honored 'How Green Was My Valley,' over 'Citizen Kane.'

"Citizen Kane" won high praise among 1941 films, but it didn't win the statue. For that year, the academy gave the award to "How Green Was My Valley," from acclaimed director John Ford. Giving "Valley" the win was not seen as a serious blunder until much later, when "Citizen Kane" became regarded as one of the greatest films of all time.
