Gov. Martin O'Malley: GOP will block jobs if Obama would get credit (VIDEO)

Congressional Republicans have decided it isn't in the GOP's interest to have President Obama succeed in creating jobs, says Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association.

Martin O’Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, delivered an aggressive attack on the GOP's economic policies as he discussed how President Obama could overcome political head winds and win reelection.

Republicans “are responsible for an awful lot of damage to our country’s economy, to the erosion of our middle class, to first stagnating and then declining wages," said Maryland Governor O'Malley, who spoke Thursday at a breakfast for political reporters hosted by the Monitor. "Their worship at the altar of tax cuts for the wealthy is unbecoming to the vast majority of hard-working families.”

O'Malley also charged that “Republicans in Congress, driven ... by a concerted group, have decided that it is not in their party’s political interest to have the president succeed in creating any jobs." He continued, "I believe therefore they will do their very best to deny him any victories that could lead to job creation or a speedier recovery.”

O’Malley was questioned about surveys that show weak poll numbers for the president, even in Democratic states, and that indicate more than 7 out of 10 Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

The DGA chair argued that voters will not make up their minds about a presidential candidate “until very late.” He said, “People over time do figure out who is on their side, who is not.”

A different view of Republican economic policies will be on view when House Speaker John Boehner gives a speech Thursday at the Economic Club of Washington.

According to Brendan Buck, the speaker’s press secretary, Mr. Boehner will discuss "the GOP’s Plan for America’s Job Creators, introduced in late May, which offers a responsible path forward focused on streamlining and reforming a burdensome tax code, stopping harmful regulations, and cutting Washington spending."
