Nine states charging hard against abortion
Abortion rights are under siege in states across America – and not just in those that are solidly red. So far this year, governors have taken action in nine states. Some are promoting new limits, others have already signed limits into law. This wave is in part a result of newly elected Republican majorities eager to move on an issue that is dear to social conservatives’ hearts.
Here’s a rundown of this year’s action, with updates added through July 5.
1. Texas: Gov. Rick Perry sparks raging battle in Legislature
Round 2 of a big fight over abortion rights is under way in the Lone Star State, after a dramatic filibuster by state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) essentially killed the legislation. Governor Perry (R) called the Texas Legislature back into session July 1 for another attempt to pass sweeping restrictions that he is eager to sign. The measures could shut down 36 of the state’s 42 reproductive health centers, Planned Parenthood says.
The proposals include: a ban on abortion after 20 weeks’ pregnancy, a requirement that abortion facilities be upgraded to become ambulatory surgical centers, and a requirement that doctors who perform abortions have admitting privileges at a local hospital. Supporters say the measures would protect women’s health; opponents say they would be financially overwhelming to the clinics.
In addition, measures that stalled in the past are back on the table, including one that would add new restrictions to the use of RU-486, an abortion-inducing drug.
