Extremely cheap leases at the Tampa International Airport given to wealthy developers were what earned the Federal Aviation Administration the “Golden Fleece” award in 2000 for misusing taxpayer funds to the tune of millions of dollars. Former Sen. William Proxmire, who made up the award, had called the FAA out for similar abuses at the airport in 1985.
